I have composed a New Puppy Owner’s suggested supply list based on my experience over the years. I recommend the following items for when you are bringing your new Maltese home:

  • 36” x 36” puppy playpen – for their “safe place” at home while you are gone
  • Washable pee pads (puppies tend to shred the disposable ones while alone)
  • Soft bed – if you are keeping the puppy in long hair, any fabric other than satin will cause static in the hair and make it more breakable
  • Pin brush with no balls at the end. I prefer the “madan brush.”
  • Greyhound comb
  • Herbal Essence Drama Clean shampoo and conditioner – mix with a bit of water to dilute before applying both the shampoo and conditioner
  • Toys to chew on
  • Collar with no decorations – they get caught in the hair
  • Lead
  • Purina Pro Plan Selects or Toy dog puppy food, or California Natural Lamb and Rice food
  • Toothbrush and dog toothpaste
  • Nail clippers if you don’t take them to a groomer or vet for this
  • Small rubber bands for topknot if you are letting the hair grow or stay long

Please see the “Links” page for my suggestions of where to buy several of these items. Also, remember to check inside of ears every week. Since the hair grows in there too, wax can build up and eventually cause an ear infection if not properly maintained. Puppies will most likely have some tearstains while getting their permanent teeth, but this should stop when all permanent teeth are in. If the stains persist please look at my link page for where to purchase a product called “Angel Eyes.”
